Belgica 121 is on its way, sailing to Antarctica

Marking the 121st anniversary since the first Antarctic expedition in human history, an international team of nine scientists embark on a journey to the frozen continent. Their choice of transport: a small sail boat.

This is the synopsis of a new documentary funded by a Kickstarter project.

It’s also a perfect introduction to the Belgica 121 expedition, which is on its way to Antarctica right now. The team of scientists on board the Australis sailing boat aims to learn more about biodiversity in the Southern Ocean and to show how polar research can be done in a sustainable way.

We wish them safe passage!

You can follow the expedition on its website: http://belgica120.be/

The Kickstarter project will fund the documentary, while the science is mostly funded by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO).
