Beyond EPICA is ‘go’ to drill for oldest ice on Earth
A European project called ‘Beyond Epica‘ held a press conference on 9th April, announcing that it is is ready to start as of December this year. Its goal: drilling for the oldest ice on Earth in east Antarctica.
Leading ice and climate scientists from 14 institutions based in ten European countries are working on the project. They’ll be drilling for an ice core almost 3 km long. This huge core will not only tell scientists more about past climate change, but also help in modelling future changes as the impact of global warming hits the entire planet.
The BBC reported on the project here: https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47848344
