A new italian scientific campaign in Antarctica

This period marks the start of the summer italian scientific campaign in Antarctica. The researchers'activities will take place in the Mario Zucchelli station, but also at other antarctic bases: such international cooperation rules the relationships in Antarctica, given the harsh conditions under which the work takes place.

Decline of periglacial zones: biodiversity at risk

Near Antarctica and the Arctic, cold regions known as 'periglacial zones'  may almost disappear by the end of the century due to climate change, according to recent research. If this happens, it will cause major harm to biodiversity and it may in turn trigger even more climate perturbation.

No agreement on protected area off East Antarctic coast

Despite pressure from Australia, France and the EU, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) recently failed to reach agreement on creating a new Marine Protection Area (MPA) off the East Antarctic coast. It had been hoped to create a protected zone covering one million square kilometers of sea rich in cold-water corals and penguin foraging grounds. This was a disappointment for many conservationists, especially after last year’s successful creation of the Ross Sea MPA, the largest such area in the world.
