60th anniversary of signing of the Antarctic Treaty

It’s 60 years since the Antarctic Treaty dedicated the continent to peace and science. And earlier this month, 29 nations signed the Prague Declaration reaffirming their commitment to these goals.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) explained more about the new declaration on its website.

The anniversary has also been marked by a call from Pascal Lamy (former Director General of the World Trade Organisation) and Genevieve Pons, director of the Jacques Delors institute, for France to play its role in protecting the biodiversity of Antarctica.
