A new italian scientific campaign in Antarctica

This period marks the start of the summer italian scientific campaign in Antarctica. The researchers’activities will take place in the Mario Zucchelli station, but also at other antarctic bases: such international cooperation rules the relationships in Antarctica, given the harsh conditions under which the work takes place.

The first 17 participants arrived at the American McMurdo Station in Antarctica, before reaching the Mario Zucchelli station with another plane. In total, there will be 210 researchers carrying 210 projects: detecting new antarctic bacteria which could be useful to boost the human immune system, or endeavouring to learn more about the past atmosphere, back to a million and half years ago, are significant examples of what will be going on this season. Moreover, there are strong connections with the franco-italian base Concordia, studying glaciology, the atmosphere, astronomy and biomedicine, among others.
