Belém agreement: expanding research in the Southern Ocean
In July, there was an announcement about the European Union expanding its research agreements with Brazil and South Africa. This ‘Belem statement‘ is primarily about the South Atlantic. But oceans are connected to one another, so it is important for Antarctica as well.
The statement enhances the EU’s existing international cooperation on marine science, including the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA) set up in 2013 in cooperation with the US and Canada. You can read more on the AORA here.
